Prof. Kirin Emlet Furst invites applications for a funded PhD position in their research group at George Mason University, ideally to start in the Spring 2024 semester. Later start dates may be considered for this or other opportunities.The primary responsibilities of the position are to lead research on the fate and transport of PFAS in natural and engineered water systems while completing the requirements for the PhD degree in Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (CEIE). The project will involve intensive laboratory work, along with fieldwork and computational components. The position would be supported with three years of GRA funding from a federal agency, with potential GRA or GTA support beyond the third year.
The Furst Water Systems Chemistry Lab conducts interdisciplinary research across multiple domains of water quality engineering, with the primary goal of acheiving equitable access to safe drinking water. Currently, our projects are focused on the impacts of climate change on water and sanitation infrastructure, and on organic contaminant fate and transport. We are also developing affordable treatment systems to enhance disinfection efficacy and PFAS removal.
