There are over 11,000 facilities across the United States that handle hazardous chemicals, such as chemical manufacturers and water treatment plants. These facilities face hazards from flooding, rising sea levels, storm surges, wildfires, and other natural disasters that are increasing in frequency due to climate change. According to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), at least 31% of these facilities are already in areas with increased risk from some of these adverse weather events. However, the US Environmental Protection Agency does not consistently assess how they are preparing for the next natural disaster.
Join Senior Analyst Krista Mantsch from GAO's Natural Resources and Environment team and the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS) to learn how chemical facilities can increase their resilience to climate change, including what to consider when updating their existing Risk Management Plans (RMP).
This ACS Webinar is co-produced with the US Government Accountability Office, ACS Chemical Health & Safety, and ACS Advocacy.
What You Will Learn
- What were the findings from the GAO's analysis regarding chemical facilities located in areas with natural hazards that may be exacerbated by climate change
- What are the challenges that chemical facilities face in managing risks from these hazards
- How can Risk Management Programs better ensure that facilities are managing these risks
