Innovations in
Active Food Packaging

FDA, Wiley Auditorium   |   College Park, MD

ACS/FDA Colloquium Series

The second ACS/FDA colloquium Innovations in Active Food Packaging was held on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Wiley Building auditorium in College Park, MD. The colloquium focused on innovations in active packaging, including polymers that improve food quality, sustainability, and safety; biological sensors that detect food spoilage; and the detection of compounds migrating from food packaging materials.

Part of a colloquium series brought to you by the US FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the American Chemical Society. The first ACS/FDA colloquium, "Frontiers in Flavor Chemistry," examined taste perception in humans, taste's impact on nutrient intake, and recent advances in food flavors.

Meet the Experts

Kay Cooksey, Clemson University

Dr. Kay Cooksey is a Professor and is the Cryovac Endowed Chair in the Packaging Science Program at Clemson University. Dr. Cooksey was a faculty intern at Dupont Packaging and Industrial Polymers Division and had the honor of receiving the Reister-Davis Lifetime Achievement Award from the Food Packaging Division of the Institute of Food Technologists in 2010. Her research focuses on food and packaging interactions and includes active packaging (specifically antimicrobial), biopolymer packaging and shelf life studies and sustainable packaging.

Julie Goddard, Cornell University

Julie Goddard is Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science at Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Within her Biomaterials & Biointerfaces research, her group designs bioactive packaging technologies in which the active agents are immobilized within or onto the surface of traditional packaging materials via covalent linkages. Such technologies offer new approaches to ‘cleaner label’ products with the goal of improving the safety, quality, and sustainability of packaged foods & beverages.

Andrew Manly, AIPIA

Mr. Andrew Manly is the Communications Director of the Active and Intelligent Packing Industry Association (AIPIA) and has 40+ years of experience. Andrew will offer perspectives about Active Packaging in the context of the current issues around sustainability, recycling, and the overall circular economy agenda.

Cristina Nerin, GUIA, University of Zaragoza

Cristina Nerin is Professor in the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Director of the Research Group GUIA, and former Director of the Master's in Environmental Engineering at the University of Zaragoza (Spain).  Dr. Nerin’s research focuses on migration studies, development of all the analytical procedures necessary to study the different migrants in both food simulants and food, their origin in the packaging (inks, adhesives , materials, etc.), and the identification of all migrants. Her research also includes new active materials for packaging and smart packaging.

The US FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) and the American Chemical Society (ACS) have formed a partnership to provide a chemistry colloquium series to be held at College Park, MD. The colloquium series will be focused on high-quality, cutting-edge chemistry related to food, food additives, food packaging, and food safety topics. These sessions will be held in College Park, MD and are available to FDA employees, ACS members, and the public to attend in person or via webcast.  Discussion of regulatory issues are outside the scope of the colloquium series.
