Green Chemistry Funding & Awards
One of the goals of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® is to recognize and support outstanding contributions in green chemistry in an effort to increase implementation of green chemistry technologies. Explore all ACS awards and funding opportunities in green chemistry and sustainability below.
Additionally, while the ACS Petroleum Research Fund (PRF) does not have a specific category of green chemistry research, it has supported several green chemistry projects. The program welcomes applicants with high quality fundamental research in the petroleum or fossil fuels fields that may have a "green" focus.
ACS Award for Affordable Green Chemistry
Recognizing outstanding, cost-efficient scientific discoveries that lay the foundation for environmentally-friendly products or manufacturing processes.
ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable Research Grant
Addressing key synthetic chemistry and process research challenges whose solutions result in more efficient pharmaceutical process development and production.
ACS-CES Award for Incorporation of Sustainability Into Chemical Education
Recognizing individuals or groups who have made exemplary contributions to the incorporation of sustainability into chemical education.
CMO Excellence in Green Chemistry Award
Recognizing outstanding efforts by Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) companies in pharmaceutical green chemistry.
Career Achievement in Green Chemistry Education
This award, co-sponsored by the ACS Green Chemistry Institute and Committee on Environmental Improvement will be given to a pedagogical innovator who has shown consistent creativity and innovation in the classroom, laboratory, and broader chemistry enterprise. Only instructors with a significant, impactful body of work will be considered for this award which is meant to acknowledge career-long contributions to the application of green chemistry in all aspects of education. The award will consist of a plaque, a $5,000 honorarium, and travel support for the awardee (up to $2,500) to attend the annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference to receive the award and speak at an invited symposium programmed in their honor.
ChemLuminary Award for Outstanding Sustainability Activities
Recognizing a local section that has introduced a new and outstanding program promoting sustainability at the local level.
Ciba Travel Awards in Green Chemistry
Sponsoring U.S. students to attend and participate in an ACS meeting, conference, or training program with a significant green chemistry or sustainability component.
Data Science and Modeling for Green Chemistry
The Data Science and Modeling for Green Chemistry award aims to recognize the research and development of computational tools that guide the design of sustainable chemical processes and the execution of green chemistry that demonstrates compelling environmental, safety, and efficiency improvements over current technologies in the pharmaceutical industry and its allied industrial partners.
Early Career Postdoctoral-Faculty Bridge Grant
The ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future aims to advance chemistry innovations to address the challenges articulated in the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
Global Innovation Imperatives (Gii)
Providing funding for a multi-day forum/conference that contributes to the resolution of global sustainability issues.
Green Chemistry Challenge Award
Promoting the environmental and economic benefits of developing and using novel green chemistry.
Green Chemistry Student Chapter Award
Providing national recognition for ACS student chapters who have shown outstanding commitment to incorporating green chemistry into their annual activities.
Heh-Won Chang, PhD Fellowship in Green Chemistry
Providing financial support to full-time graduate students conducting research in green chemistry.
Joseph Breen Memorial Fellowship
Supporting the participation of a young international green chemistry scholar in a green chemistry technical meeting, conference, or training program.
Kenneth G. Hancock Memorial Award
Providing national recognition and honor for outstanding student contributions to furthering the goals of green chemistry through research and/or studies.
Local Section Sustainability Programming Grant
Promoting opportunities to increase awareness of the essential role of chemistry in responding to sustainability challenges.
Nina McClelland Memorial Award
The Nina McClelland Memorial Award provides $2,000 to postdoctoral scholars to travel and present at the ACS GCI's Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference.
Peter J. Dunn Award for Green Chemistry & Engineering Impact in the Pharmaceutical Industry
Presented by the ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable, this award recognizes excellence in the research, development, and execution of green chemistry that demonstrates environmental, safety, and efficiency improvements.
Principal Investigator Development in Sustainability Grant
This award will provide early or mid-career investigators (Associate+) to spend 6-12 months in the laboratory in a private company, a national laboratory, or an academic laboratory in a different institution, with the goal of establishing robust collaborations across industry-academia or across disciplines and taking advantage of the mentorship of a faculty member distinct from their prior mentors.
Rising Stars in Green Chemistry Education Award
There are two annual awards: one designated for a scholar teaching in the U.S. and the other for an international scholar teaching at an institution outside the U.S. Each award will consist of a certificate, $1,000 honorarium, and travel support for the awardee and one student (up to $2,000 each) to attend the annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference to receive the award and present their work.
Teaching Green Fellowship
This award will be given to a pedagogical innovator who has reimagined one or more parts of the chemistry curriculum to better prepare students for future careers in which they can work toward addressing grand global challenges such as those addressed by the U.N. SDGs. The award will consist of a certificate, $10,000 dedicated to faculty summer salary, $5,000 for summer stipend(s) for student(s) working in conjunction with faculty on greener curriculum materials, and travel support for the awardee and one student (up to $1,000 each) to attend the annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference to receive the award and present their work.
