Purpose

To recognize distinguished contributions to the understanding of the chemistry and physics of liquids.

Description

The award consists of $5,000 and a certificate. Up to $1,000 in travel expenses to the meeting at which the award will be presented will be reimbursed.

Eligibility

The award will be granted regardless of race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, presence of disabilities, and educational background.

Deadline

November 1 (Annual Review)

Nominations for this award are not being accepted for the 2025 National Awards cycle due to a lack of funding.

History

The award was established in 1980 in recognition of the scientific contributions of ACS Past President Joel H. Hildebrand. The first award was presented to Dr. Hildebrand as part of the observances of his 100^th birthday in November 1981. The award was sponsored by the Shell Companies Foundation, Inc. from 1981 to 1987. The ACS sponsored the award in 1988 and E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. sponsored the award from 1989 to 1992. The ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co. sponsored the award from 1992 to 2022.
