Stacy Glidden majored in chemistry, and then went on to earn a Master of Business Administration. She found her first job out of school the old fashioned way—lots of networking with fellow students.
Glidden has been an ACS member since 2000. She was program chair the 2013 Great Lakes Regional Meeting, and was able to bring a Chemical Hygiene Officer’s workshop to the meeting. Glidden has found that ACS events have given her the opportunity to share other issues she’s passionate about as well. “The GLRM meeting gave me the opportunity to provide other scientists with critical information regarding eating disorders,” Glidden says, for example

Typical day on the job:
I spend about 25% of my time managing other people and 25% planning and implementing projects. The rest of my time is spent in meetings (10%), writing reports (15%), collaborating with peers (15%) and bench time (10%).
Work environment:
I work in an office most of the time. We are the technical division of ALM, a holding company. MTE Services provides laboratory and technical support to all the divisions of ALM. We also provide forensic analysis as needed. One of our greatest assets is that we are positioned to be very agile and can develop testing to suit almost any need in the asphalt paving industry.
Work schedule:
50 hours per week. It’s a flexible schedule. Our winter schedule is focused on research and development. During the paving season we focus on quality control for our paving operations.
Travel schedule:
I travel 1-5 days each month.
